Itinerary of MEKONG DELTA CYCLING TO NATIONAL BIOSPHERE OF MANGROVE FOREST
DAY 1: Saigon – My Tho – Vinh Long
Take a bus drive around 90 minutes out of the busy Saigon, on the highway over the vast green rice fields, passing by the local villages and arrive a little beautiful town named MyTho. Enjoy a boat trip with cruising along the huge Mekong river, with the scenes of fishing port, local houses by the river bank, visiting local fruit orchards with little wondering around, having some seasonal fruits and possibly get some folk music by the family. Further experiencing the initial beauty of Mekong Delta can be taking a sampan along the peaceful canals, sitting in a garden and have some honey tea, or having local food as lunch in a local house with high possibility of getting cup of a house wine by the host.
After lunch, have a rest for a while before being ready for our deep Mekong delta cycling. Follow the narrow dirty roads or small asphalt roads along local villages, going over numerous small bridges, crossing rivers by local ferries, soaking your feeling into rice farms, or just stopping by a village bistro and have talks with local people.
The bike is ended by a boat trip to the Cai Be floating market where you can see a lot of boats for vegetable merchandizing, and for living the whole family. It’s also a great chance for a sunset (if any) on the huge Mekong river from the boat trip.
The boat trip takes you to a local house for an overnight. Enjoy the dinner, the house wine, the hummock, and the hospitality of the host.
DAY 2: Vinh Long – Long Xuyen – Chau Doc
After breakfast, take a short boat ride to the bus for a transfer to Long Xuyen where we start our Mekong delta cycling today to the small villages not many tourists can go. We cycle along the beautiful trails in the My Hoa Hung island (it’s a very huge island). The trails are very flat except small bridges over small canals. Along the roads, together with river views, you can get fertile scenery Vietnam feeling with small villages, markets, orchards, fish farms and daily life of Mekong Delta.
Further cycling will take you to the end of island where you should go across the river by local ferry to Cham land and that makes a different view of biking. Champa was a lost Kingdom locating in the middle of Vietnam and now has a major community here. The Mekong Champa people follows Islam and that makes the view much different in houses, people along the road, and their business.
More fantastic view along your long bike today is the biggest fish farming villages en route. But that’s not the last, because after checking in your hotel and having looking over your window to the endless rice fields beneath your room.
DAY 3: Chau Doc – Can Tho
In the morning, take a boat trip on the river to the fish farms you saw yesterday, to understand way they cultivate fish here, as well as to have a closer look the life on boats.
After the boat trip is the beautiful bike Tra Su biosphere park which is a mangrove forest with great source of flora and fauna. Further biking to Tri Ton along along a lot of Khmer pagoda en route and we might stop at some of them for a visit.
Stop at highway and take a lift to Cantho city for overnight.
DAY 4: Can Tho – Saigon
Take an early boat ride to Cai Rang floating market for the best view of floating market in Mekong Delta. The local people go to the market early and we don’t see much if we are late. After amazing scenery of the market, get cruising further to small canals for more beauty of this water way. We then stop the boat in the middle of nowhere, start the Mekong delta cycling along the canals, over small bridges, with countryside roads, and with local people cycling to the friends houses.
After lunch, have a bus drive back to Saigon. End your Mekong delta cycling trip.
